Charm of Houjicha

Today, I'd like to mention "Houjicha" which is one of Japanese traditional tea.








I guess almost all peoples have heard "Green tea".
Actually, This Houjicha also representative Japanese tea.

Firstly, let's compare the leaf color between Sencha and Houjicha.



 "Sencha"

=> Green color






"Houjicha"
=> Brown color




As  you can see this, the colors are totally different!!

However.....Houjicha tea leaf was also green color at the beginning actually.

"Houji" means "Roast".  Therefore, "Houjicha” means "Roasted Green tea”.

In detail, the materials are like stalks and coarse green tea. These tea leaf doesn't contains a lot of sweet components such as theanine. Also very slight tastes.
Therefore, men of other day thought that it should changed taste by roasted.
Then, Houjicha was born.


Houjicha is characterized by its unique aroma created by roasting tea at high temperature. It's not contains a lot of caffeins, so it's easy to drink. Houjicha is preferred by wide range ages people from children to elderly.
You can more enjoy with the roasted fragrant if you below with high temperature water.




Personally, I tried making Houjicha from Green tea.


This is called "Houroku" which is item to roast.







To heat Houroku well (about 3 minutes)







To turns it to circulate.
(To prevent burning)
Until changing leaf color to brown.

While this step, you can enjoy roasted fragrant.
The fragrant of Houjicha has substance having relaxing.






To put them into Kyusu.






To blew with high temperature water.
